A Tradition that Lives on
The Art of Lion Dancing has become, in many places, more a memory than a regular part of Kung Fu training. Historically, however, Lion Dance has been an integral part of traditional Kung Fu practice, particularly within Southern Chinese martial arts such as Hung Ga.

While Lion Dance is traditionally performed to bring good fortune and ward off negative influences, it also helps develop physical skills such as coordination, balance, timing, strength, and endurance. At the same time, it cultivates focus, resilience, teamwork, and the “live power” expressed through movement. These qualities are closely connected and underlie traditional Kung Fu practice, linking the art directly to both physical training and martial spirit.

At Yee’s Hung Ga, Lion Dance has long been regarded as an important part of our training. It remains part of the regular curriculum as a way to preserve tradition and to give students a more complete understanding of the art, both physically and culturally. At times, the team goes beyond standard performance, exploring more demanding ways of expressing the Lion Dance.
Over the years, Yee’s Hung Ga has taken part in many competitions and cultural events. In 1990, our school's dedication to the Lion Dance earned us the title of the First U.S.A National Lion Dance Champions, as well as Provincial Traditional Lion Dance Champions in Guangdong Province, People's Republic of China.

Yee’s Hung Ga also maintains a long-standing tradition of participating in community events. For over fifty years, the school has taken part in the New York City Chinatown Super Saturday Parade, a large annual celebration that brings together many Kung Fu schools and cultural organizations. Alongside others in the community, we participate with Lion and Dragon Dance, and Kung Fu performances as part of the shared celebration.
Today, the Lion Dance team continues to perform at community gatherings, festivals, grand openings, weddings and special events, contributing to the continuation of Lion and Dragon Dance traditions.
Our Lion Dance Team is available for hire for events and celebrations. Please contact us in advance to inquire about rates and availability.
