Great Grandmaster Yuen Ling
2nd Generation From Wong Fei Hung
· The Negotiator · The Underworld Honored his Righteousness; the Authorities Revered his Virtue ·
Great Grandmaster Yuen Ling (阮玲/邓芳), full name Yuen Gok Ling (阮国玲), was originally from Sun Wui (新会) in Guangdong. When he was young, his family fell on difficult times, resulting in his leaving for Foshan and Guangzhou to make a living. He first learned kung fu from Sifu Lei Jun (李珍) at the Foshan Luk Fung Association.
Many years later, he also learned “Dog Boxing”, or Ground Method Boxing, from a Sifu nicknamed Sao Gao Leng (梢狗椋), who belonged to one of the Southern Shaolin styles. He then learned old-style Hung Kuen from Sifu Gam Yu Dang (金余党), which greatly improved his martial arts skills. Finally, Yuen Ling heard of a disciple of Wong Fei Hung called Tang Fong, and he sought him out to learn from him. He followed Great Grandmaster Tang Fong (邓芳) right up to Tang Fong’s death in 1955.

In 1948, while Tang Fong was teaching at the Jewelry Union and East Borough Fish Market Association in Hong Kong and Kowloon, Yuen Ling became his assistant.

Yuen Ling eventually took over the East Borough Fish Markets when Tang Fong no longer had the time to do it. With Tang Fong’s permission, in 1954, he opened a school on the ground floor of 73 Dong Sai Street (东大街) in Shau Kei Wan, where he accepted students and practiced dit da medicine. He became famous for his Dit Da medicine – jow, paste and pills.

Grandmaster Yuen was also proficient in lion dancing. He was well known for his Ngauh Chat Sau Dai Si. His black lion head was famous throughout Hong Kong for its run-ins with other lions and dragons; having never lost in these encounters.
Yuen Ling had a son and a daughter. His son, Yuen Kai Chi, became a famous writer and movie director in Hong Kong and won many awards. Among his films are Sin Loi Yao Wan (忻泪幽渊), Jui Kuen a.k.a. Drunken Master, and the Once Upon a Time in China trilogy about Wong Fei Hung’s life. His daughter, Yuen Lai Seung, became a renowned psychiatrist.
Yuen Ling’s students are spread throughout the world and are too numerous to list. Among them are Do Duk Sum (杜德森); Yuen Yao Chin (阮有钦); Lei Siu Fong (黎兆芳); Choi Hung Biu (徐鸿标); Fok Siu Jan (霍少珍); and many others.
Most of his students currently have businesses or occupations outside the martial arts; only Yuen Yao Chin and Yee Chee Wai (Grandmaster Frank Yee) have carried on teaching Yuen Ling’s system.

Great Grandmaster Yuen Ling died in 1966 at the young age of 45. On the day of his funeral, martial artists from all over Hong Kong, as well as members of the law enforcement and underworld communities came to pay their respects. It was one of the largest funeral processions in Hong Kong’s history.
